Designing a Stunning App Layout with Glide: My Experience in Streamlining Business Processes

Welcome back to my blog series, "Glide for Growth." Today, I'm excited to delve into the third crucial step in using Glide to simplify, automate, and scale your business: designing the app layout. After establishing a data storage system, the next focus is on the layout – the interface you interact with every time you complete a task. The layout is the visual and interactive aspect of your app, encompassing everything you see and engage with on the screen.

The Importance of Simplicity in Layout Design

In your business process, tasks like adding, viewing, editing information, clicking buttons, changing statuses, assigning tasks, and marking items as complete are common. The key to an effective layout is simplicity. You should reflect on the process you're working on and replicate those steps visually on the screen.

Let's revisit Ellie's catering business, our ongoing example. Ellie's goal is to systematize her proposal sending process. She already has a table for client and event information. Now, we're moving on to building the screens for her app.

Building the Screens

We'll start with a form screen for new events, including fields for the first name, last name, organization, email, event name, and event date. This screen will be named 'Add Event'. Next, we'll create a screen where Ellie can view and update all events and catering proposals. This will be displayed as a table showing the event name, organization, and date. When an event is selected, this screen will update to show detailed information, including the first name, last name, and email, all organized in a container at the top. Below this, we'll add text entry components for Ellie to input appetizers, entrees, and desserts. This layout effectively facilitates the creation, viewing, and updating of event proposals.

The Transformative Step

The final and most transformative step is automating the creation and sending of the proposal. This aspect, which was a major pain point for Ellie, will be the focus of our next video.

Designing an app layout in Glide is not just about aesthetics; it's about creating an intuitive, user-friendly interface that mirrors your business processes.
